North Shore Bank is a locally-owned and managed, independent, community bank that has been operating in the Duluth area for over 100 years! North Shore Bank is seeking a Controller to join our team! This position will be responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting functions, preparing internal financial statements, ensuring compliance with regulatory reporting and contributing to the Bank’s strategic financial planning. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in banking finance, accounting and regulatory compliance, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments to meet the Bank’s financial goals. Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and oversee financial statements in compliance with GAAP and relevant regulatory standards. Analyze financial performance, identify trends, provide recommendations to senior management for improving financial performance and prepare internal and external reports.
  • Ensure compliance with all banking regulations and financial reporting requirements, including those set by the Federal Reserve, FDIC, OCC, and other governing agencies. Assist in the preparation and submission of regulatory filings such as Call Reports and other required reports.
  • Oversee the maintenance, accuracy, compliance and proper accounting treatment of the general ledger and the bank’s monthly and year-end closing processes. Manage account reconciliations, ensuring discrepancies are promptly resolved.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting. Lead the preparation and coordination of internal and external audits and monitor adherence to the bank’s policies and procedures to ensure financial integrity.
  • Assist in the preparation of the bank’s annual budget and financial forecasts. Evaluate financial performance against the budget and identify variances, providing recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance on accounting best practices and professional development, including coordinating staff training.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support overall banking operations and financial strategy. Provide financial insight and support for strategic decision-making, capital expenditures and investment decisions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a financial accounting role, with at least two years in a supervisory capacity, ideally within the banking or financial services industry. Position title/level will be based on experience and department needs.
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, banking regulations and financial reporting practices.
  • Experience with banking software and financial systems (e.g., Symitar, Jack Henry, or other core banking systems).
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage a team and drive performance.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and compliance.
